I bet your parents told you too. Whenever I complained, or grizzled, or whined about something, that was the line I got back: ‘When you’re older, you’ll realise these were the best days of your life.’ I’m reminded again because school’s back, and the best thing about school is…

SRE. Special Religious Education. Scripture. The unique opportunity that we have in NSW to go into local schools and teach the kids about Jesus every single week. It’s a unique opportunity from the other side of the classroom, though, too. Sadly, for far too many kids, school scripture is their single best chance to hear the gospel. Many do not come from a Christian home, and they might never have another chance to hear about Christ, ask their questions, and trust in him; to come face to face with their Lord.

SRE. Can you remember who taught you? I’d have a good chance of even pointing out where Mrs Stewart-Moore lived at the time. And I can still remember writing inside the copy of Prince Caspian that I was given ‘From Mrs Hunziker’. I think it’s the only time I’ve ever written somebody else’s name inside my own book.

SRE. The R stands for relational. Who our teachers are, and how we relate to the kids, has the potential to change lives. Much of what we teach will be soon forgotten, but they’ll know about Jesus, and they’ll know they know about him because a Christian came to school to teach them. Because we, total strangers, loved them.

SRE. Pray for our teachers. Pray that E isn’t just education, but a real encounter with the Saviour. Who knows what God will do with each young life, and what stories they’ll be able to tell?
